Las Palmas in a day: sightseeing bus, walking tour, or a coach from the south?

Updated October 3, 2026 · 9 min read

The short answer depends on where you are sleeping. If you are staying in the south, book the coach day trip to Las Palmas at €39.20 — it solves the only genuinely hard part of the day, which is getting there and back. If you are already in the city or off a ship, the private old town walking tour at €55 is better value than the sightseeing bus, which has 3.7 stars from 1,004 reviews — nothing on this island with more than a thousand reviews is rated lower. If you want to cover the distances, the bus at €25 is still the only thing that does it.

Las Palmas is long and thin, and that shapes every decision here. The cathedral quarter of Vegueta sits at the southern end, the city beach of Las Canteras at the northern one, and the cruise terminal and Poema del Mar in between. Nobody walks all of that in a morning. What you choose depends on whether your problem is distance, depth or transport.

The bus: what €25 actually buys

City Sightseeing Europe runs the open-top double-decker, and the ticket is valid for a day with a multilingual audio guide. The route has eleven stops: Parque Santa Catalina, El Corte Inglés, Auditorio Alfredo Kraus, Paseo de la Cornisa, Pueblo Canario, Vegueta and the cathedral, the San Telmo bus station, Muelle Deportivo, Muelle Santa Catalina, Poema del Mar and Playa de las Canteras. That is the city end to end, and it is the honest case for the bus: on foot those eleven points are a long day.

What is less obvious is that €25 is the bottom of three tiers, and the extras are where the ticket gets interesting. The 24-hour ticket includes entry to the San Antonio Abad hermitage, a guided walking tour of Vegueta and free parking at El Corte Inglés. The 24-hour Experience ticket adds a boat tour, entry to the Museo Elder and one tapa at a choice of partner venues. The 48-hour Premium Experience ticket adds the Museum of Sacred Art, the cathedral and its tower, the Museo Canario — and entry to Mundo del Plátano, the banana estate we compare in the banana, rum and coffee tastings.

Two consequences for your planning. First, the guided Vegueta walk is already inside the cheapest ticket, so buying the bus and a separate old-town walking tour is paying twice for overlapping ground. Second, if the cathedral tower and the Museo Canario are on your list, price the premium tier against the individual admissions before you default to €25.

The vouchers are usable on any day within twelve months of the travel date you select, which makes the bus the most weather-proof purchase here. And then there is the rating: 3.7 stars from 1,004 reviews. That is a lot of people who were not delighted, and it is the number we would weigh most heavily if your day in the city is your only one.

The old town on foot, with a guide

The private walking tour is run by Gran Canaria Excursions and lasts two and a half hours through Triana and Vegueta. Included are a local multilingual guide, the private format and one tapa per person at a local spot. Not included: any further food and drink, hotel pickup, and gratuities. You meet at the Quiosco San Telmo, La Modernista, on Calle Triana — which is also where the bus station stop sits, so the two are easy to combine in one morning.

The operator describes the tour as wheelchair accessible and asks you to get in touch in advance about mobility concerns or special requests. Old-town pavements and the slope up through Vegueta are what they are, so take the operator up on that rather than assuming.

At €55 per person it is the most expensive way to spend two and a half hours in this comparison, and at 4.7 stars from 217 reviews it is also the best-evidenced of the small-group options. If what you want is the food rather than the history, the tapas and drinks tour of Vegueta costs the same for two hours in a small group, and the guided bike tour at €35 covers the port district and the old town in one morning for twenty euros less — 4.8 stars, though from only 57 reviews.

Coming from the south, which most people are

If your hotel is in Maspalomas, Playa del Inglés or Mogán, the city is at the other end of the island and the day stands or falls on the journey. The Alsa excursion at €39.20 is built for exactly that, and its booking page sets out the seven hours: 45 minutes by coach to the city, a 30-minute guided walk in Vegueta, 30 minutes of free time there, a 15-minute transfer, then three hours of free time at Playa de las Canteras, and the coach home. Poema del Mar can be added for an extra fee and is listed at an hour and a half.

Read that breakdown before you book, because it is a beach day with a short guided introduction, not a city tour. If what you want is the old town, three hours on the sand is most of your day. If what you want is Las Canteras — and it is a genuinely good city beach — the arithmetic is excellent. Included are the coach, the local guide, traveller insurance and the optional aquarium admission; food and drinks are not. The operator lists the trip as unsuitable for people with mobility impairments and for people with a low level of fitness. With 17 reviews behind its 4.6 stars, it is the thinnest evidence base in this comparison.

The alternative is to drive yourself, and for a family it is often the cheaper one: the GC-1 motorway runs the length of the island, and parking is free at El Corte Inglés with a bus ticket. What a car costs on your dates is a two-minute comparison for Gran Canaria, and our separate article covers whether you need one at all.

Who should skip all of this

Anyone with one day and a strong preference for landscape. Las Palmas is a working city of apartment blocks, a cathedral quarter and a long beach; the thing people remember about Gran Canaria is usually the inside of the island. If this is your only free day, compare it honestly against the island’s highlights before you commit.

Anyone with limited mobility should check twice: the coach excursion rules it out explicitly, the walking tour asks you to call first, and Vegueta is cobbled and sloped.

And anyone whose real target is the aquarium does not need any of these. Poema del Mar sells its own skip-the-counter ticket at €29, which is cheaper than adding it to a coach day you did not otherwise want.

Our recommendation

For most people, who are staying in the south: the excursion to Las Palmas with the optional aquarium at €39.20. Coach there and back, a guided half-hour in Vegueta and a long afternoon at Las Canteras. Go in knowing it is a beach day with a city introduction, and that 17 reviews are not many.

If you are already in the city, or off a ship: the private old town walking tour with a tapa at €55. Two and a half hours, your own guide, Triana and Vegueta, 4.7 stars from 217 reviews. On a budget, the bike tour at €35 covers more ground for less.

If distance is the problem: the hop-on-hop-off bus at €25, eleven stops from Vegueta to Las Canteras, a Vegueta walking tour already included, and a voucher good for twelve months. Its 3.7 stars from 1,004 reviews are the warning on the label — book it for the transport, not for the experience.

If you are going for the food: the tapas and drinks tour in the old town at €55 for two hours in a small group — the one booking here where the tapa is the point rather than a bonus on a ticket.
