Gran Canaria rainforest tour: Doramas, Azuaje and the real length of the day

Updated September 12, 2026 · 5 min read

A walker approaching a stone bridge amid dense green vegetation

The rainforest excursion is a good reason to leave the southern beaches if you want to walk through a greener part of Gran Canaria. It is a poor choice if “forest” makes you picture a short, shaded stroll followed by an early return to the hotel. This is a day trip with several settings, and the transfer can take a substantial part of it.

The local catalogue checked on 12 September 2026 lists tour 403873 at €103.50 per person, eight hours, 4.7 stars and 280 reviews. Its description names Firgas, Doramas Forest, a sustainable farm and volcanic pools. The corresponding Climbo itinerary specifies Azuaje and El Puertillo. Match your selected booking option to that programme before buying.

Why the north is different

The island’s tourism authority links its varied microclimates to the interaction between trade winds, mountains and altitude. “Two climate zones” is a useful first contrast between north and south, but too simple as a forecast for every valley. Official climate explanation.

For planning, this means the conditions beside your hotel pool are not enough to choose clothing for the entire route. Look at the forecast for the places visited. A cloudy forest day is not automatically a failed excursion: if your interest is plants and ravine scenery, distant visibility matters less than on a summit outing.

The term rainforest can also mislead. The official tourism inventory describes Los Tilos de Moya as one of Gran Canaria’s surviving laurel-forest strongholds. That is a reminder that the northern forest is a landscape of remnants, not an uninterrupted tropical jungle. Los Tilos is a separate place; it is not listed as a stop on this excursion. Los Tilos reserve.

What this tour actually joins together

Climbo’s current programme combines Firgas, a walk in Azuaje, the Ventana Verde farm and El Puertillo’s natural pools. That mix is the product: town, ravine, food and coast. Climbo rainforest tour.

Do not divide eight hours by the number of stops and assume equal time in each. Transfers and group movement do not work that way. If walking is your priority, ask for the expected time on the Azuaje section. If local food is the attraction, ask what the tasting contains. Neither question is answered by the word “eco-tour”.

The variety can work well for companions with different interests. It can also frustrate somebody who wants a whole day under trees and regards every town stop as lost hiking time. Decide which version describes you before comparing review scores.

Eight hours or longer?

The catalogue says eight hours. Climbo’s own information gives a broader hotel-to-hotel range of 8–10.5 hours, including transport. The difference is important for a southern stay: the displayed activity duration should not automatically become a dinner reservation time. Ask for your pickup-specific return estimate. Operator’s duration information.

Leave the evening flexible. A long transfer remains a long transfer even if somebody else drives. If you have a flight, cruise departure or prepaid evening activity, this is not the day to accept an approximate return without checking the consequences. The tour’s appeal is its breadth, and that breadth needs time.

Price: compare the same departure

Two adults at the catalogue starting price total €207. Climbo’s direct page displays €115 per person, which would be €230 for two. That €23 difference is a comparison of advertised prices, not proof that one channel is always cheaper. Date, availability and the chosen option may change the amount.

Before deciding, compare the pickup location and included tasting on both pages. A saving disappears quickly if one option leaves you to organise an extra journey. Confirm dietary requirements before booking; do not rely on the word “local” to establish what you can eat.

Walking and the pool stop

The operator calls the Azuaje section a moderate walk. Treat this as a terrain question, not just a fitness label. Ask about uneven sections and whether the day’s route fits any mobility limitations. We have not verified it as step-free, and shade does not make a path accessible.

At El Puertillo, consider the pool visit a possible coastal ending, not guaranteed swimming. Conditions on the day and the guide’s decision matter. Ask what non-swimmers do while others enter the water, and where you can change. We have not verified toilets or changing facilities at every stage.

For children, confirm the operator’s current age conditions on the individual booking page. The short catalogue entry supplies no verified minimum. Also ask about child seats and the length of the uninterrupted walking section. For questions about sun protection, consult a pharmacist or paediatrician.

Which alternative fits better?

Choose this excursion for a varied northern day with walking. If you mainly want town centres, the Arucas–Firgas–Teror tour in our catalogue is €52 for eight hours: a different focus at a lower displayed price. If your priority is a mountain landmark, compare the Roque Nublo excursions.

Our island guide helps place these routes, and the family guide covers shorter options. For this rainforest departure, settle the actual return estimate before you arrange anything else that evening.
