Gran Canaria is often called a “miniature continent”. For families, that phrase has a practical side that no brochure mentions: the island is only around fifty kilometres wide, but between the south and the north lie a mountain range, two climate zones and, depending on the route, an hour’s drive. Anyone who overlooks that when planning ends up spending the holiday in the hire car.
Almost all families stay in the south — Maspalomas, Playa del Inglés, San Agustín, Puerto Rico, Arguineguín, Puerto de Mogán. The sun shines there even when the trade wind clouds hang over Las Palmas, and that’s where most of what you can book departs from. That’s the good news. The other side: some of the sights Gran Canaria is known for lie elsewhere.
The short things that reliably work

The guided tour of a banana plantation costs €15, lasts 40 minutes and ends with a tasting. 3,389 reviews at 4.8 stars are remarkable for such an unspectacular topic. Only the tour is short, though: the plantation is in Arucas in the north, around an hour’s drive from the south.
And the horse riding excursion for €35 is one of the very few experiences to state an age limit at all: suitable for beginners and children aged 5 and up, with a minimum of two participants.
The parks — and where they are
Palmitos Park near Maspalomas is a zoological and botanical park with a dolphin and bird show, tickets from €39. At €13 it’s among the cheapest family options on the island, and it sits halfway between the south and the airport.

What the distance does to the day
From Maspalomas to Las Palmas it’s a good fifty kilometres on the GC-1 motorway along the east coast, in practice just under an hour each way. The airport lies roughly halfway. A trip to the aquarium in the north is therefore not a morning but a whole day — bookended by two car journeys that, for a child, are the most boring part.
It’s even clearer with the mountains. The full-day tours into the island’s interior to Roque Nublo, Pico de las Nieves and the mountain villages last 7.5 to 8.5 hours and cost €46 to €48. Scenically, this is the best part of the island. For children under about eight years old, though, it’s usually the wrong choice: the roads up are narrow and winding, the viewpoints come in quick succession, and there’s no getting out along the way. Anyone who still wants to see the mountains should take the half-day versions, or drive themselves and cut the trip short if the mood turns.
Water, wind and shade
The south is the sheltered side. Off Puerto Rico, Anfi and Arguineguín the water is usually calm, and that’s where the boats depart — from the catamaran trip with dolphin watching for €38 to jet-skiing and parasailing off Playa del Inglés. Then an indoor destination like the aquarium suddenly becomes the best plan of the holiday.
Minimum age: there’s no island-wide rule
Anyone who gives you a general age limit for Gran Canaria has made it up.
