Maspalomas dunes with children: paths, viewpoints and when to turn back

Updated October 1, 2026 · 6 min read

Two visitors sitting in the Maspalomas dunes in warm evening light

Walking into the Maspalomas dunes costs nothing, and as a suggestion for a first visit with children, 30 to 45 minutes from one edge of the reserve is usually enough. The decisive question isn’t how far you get, but when you turn back: a short look at the landscape and a crossing of the dune field are different outings. Anyone who wants something booked instead can take the guided camel ride in the Maspalomas sand dunes for €18 per person and 30 minutes, with 4.5 out of 5 from 5,146 reviews the second most-reviewed experience on the island. It has its own route and its own participation conditions — it is not an entrance fee for looking at the dunes.

See prices and dates for the camel ride

For a first visit, choose one edge of the reserve and keep the other for another day. You do not need to complete a circuit to experience the dunes. This guide is about walking and looking; details on the ride are in our guide to the Maspalomas camel ride.

What nature reserve means here

The official tourism authority asks visitors to stay within designated areas and on marked paths. A line of footprints is therefore not a route recommendation. Follow the signs at your entrance, even when people ahead of you take a shortcut. Official dune guidance.

That changes the family plan: choose a permitted route because it suits your children, not because a photograph shows somebody standing on a particular crest. If a barrier interrupts your intended direction, return along the authorised path. There is no reason to teach a tired child that a rope is optional because the hotel seems nearer across it.

The dunes, lagoon and vegetation belong to the same landscape. The reserve is not simply an empty sand playground beside the resorts. The tourism authority identifies the Charca as an important habitat for birds. Watching from the edge can be the outing in its own right. Reserve description.

Choose your starting side

On the Maspalomas lighthouse side, make the Charca and the edge of the dunes your focus. This suits a family that wants a brief look followed by a settled break. On the Playa del Inglés side, start with the view over the dune field and decide afterwards whether a marked walk still sounds appealing. The two sides are different starting points, not consecutive tasks you owe the children.

Choose the return point before setting out. If your accommodation is in Meloneras, there is little sense in walking towards Playa del Inglés merely because the map shows a continuous beach. If you are based in Playa del Inglés, the lighthouse need not become today’s finish line. Our guide to the south explains the resort layout.

How long should you allow?

As a planning suggestion, reserve 30–45 minutes for a first look, including pauses, and extend only if everyone wants to continue. This is our suggested family budget, not an official trail duration. It does not promise that you can cross the reserve in that time.

Stop while the return still looks easy. A child who is happy going downhill through sand may feel differently coming back. Carrying a tired child while another wants to explore can turn a modest walk into the hardest part of the day. Agree on a visible turnaround point along the marked route before the first request for “one more dune”.

There is no universally comfortable hour. Assess the heat and wind on the day, rather than copying an exact time from somebody else’s holiday. Strong wind can make a viewing stop more attractive than a walk. For questions about children’s sun protection, ask a pharmacist or paediatrician.

Pushchairs, shade and toilets

Do not plan to push a standard buggy through loose sand. Staying on a promenade is a different proposition from entering a sandy trail. There is no evidence of a continuous accessible route through the reserve, and a photograph of a flat viewpoint is not one. If step-free access is essential, confirm the approach to your chosen viewpoint before travelling.

Make the toilet break before the walk and identify where you will take the next one. Whether there are toilets within the dune routes is not documented, so do not promise a child a toilet beyond the next ridge. The same applies to shade: plan the sheltered break at the resort edge, not at an assumed shelter somewhere in the sand.

Bring what the family needs for a short outing, but avoid treating this as a beach relocation with every bag and toy. Keeping the plan small makes turning back a normal decision instead of an expensive disappointment.

Is the camel ride easier?

The guided dune camel ride costs €18 for 30 minutes. Four places at the displayed rate total €72; actual child prices depend on the booking option. A child unwilling to mount an animal will not be persuaded by a shorter duration either. Check the operator’s current participation conditions instead of borrowing age limits from another camel park.

Alongside it are three more short bookings within reach of the southern resorts:

When to leave the dunes for another day

Skip the sandy walk if the children are already tired, somebody needs a reliably step-free route that has not been confirmed, or your whole plan depends on reaching a particular photo location. A look from the edge remains a real visit.

For a baby or toddler, use our baby guide or toddler guide to choose the rest of the day. Leave enough room afterwards for a meal near where you finish, rather than a second excursion with a fixed departure.

Our recommendation

For most families: start with the free walk along the edge of the reserve, 30 to 45 minutes with a turnaround point agreed in advance. It needs no booking, just water, a hat and a decision about which side to start on.

If you want something booked: the guided camel ride in the sand dunes for €18. Thirty minutes is short enough for small children, and with 5,146 reviews it’s the most-reviewed experience in this comparison.

For a windy or hazy day: Palmitos Park for €39, with 4.8 out of 5 — the best rating in this comparison. If the children would rather have water than animals, Aqualand Maspalomas for €41 is the alternative, though at 4.1 out of 5 it’s rated noticeably lower.

Not for you is the sandy walk if you’d need to push a buggy through the dunes, if somebody in the group needs a reliably step-free route, or if the child has already had enough for today. Then a look from the edge isn’t the fallback — it’s the visit.
